Why does everyone want to get into parliament at all cost?
May 20, 2008
The recent parliamentary primaries of the NPP have taken a violent turn with some aspiring MP’s threatening others with death while supporters of some loosing aspirants have clashed with the Police leaving many injured.
Many other incidents have been reported across the country as the scramble for parliamentary seats continue.
But parliamentarians have always complained of inadequate logistics and poor conditions of service while others say most of their work is not appreciated while constituents expect too much from them.
Panelists on the Super Morning Show Osei Kyei Mensa Bonsu (majority leader) NPP and Steve Akorli (Former MP) NDC, agree that majority of MPs in today’s parliament are in the house for parochial reasons.
Yet many of the MPs deny this and argue that they are in the house to serve the needs of their people.
What do you think of your MP? Is he/she in parliament for your needs or for personal gains?

Got something to say?

My MP is Hon Alhaji Mohammed Soglo -Madina Abokobi Constituency. Honestly speaking he may be a gentleman but his output leaves much to desired. In the Capital we still have terrible roadnetwork, a big gutter that is eroding the founfationg of buildings and low Voltage that is damaging people Electrical appliances. The solution is simple use his common fund or lobby for the right things to be done to reduce the hardship on the people.
Heis busy talking about NPP for sale. This is non scoring and annoying for such high profile man. An alhaji who sholuld know the importance of clealiness as a Muslim. The Whole community is filthy and a big gutter threatening to swallow people any time it rains.
The answer is to get rich quick without any criminal charges against them.
All paliamentarians are white colour criminals, who do they think the can fool. They always potray thier job as not attractive but behind the scene they wants to commit murder for that same job. For me I will love to see Ghanaians to vote for someone who can help alliviate thier suffering instead of voting for people who are greed and self destroyers.
Kojo, the answer is simple. The reason is that they all want to get rich quick.Ask them whether they are able to payback the loan for the pajeros and landcruisers.I will definitely be there one day.
Kojo,is to get rich quick and live confortably,
why is that ghanaians can not stand up to defind what is right, lorry fares is increased by 3Gp drivers decides to increase it by 5Gp.
People are not just struggling to go to paliament for free. Its because that is where they can steal honourable and go free.
Kojo lets get it right. It is only the N.P.P MP’S who are fighting themselves to get into parliament and there is a reason which is not for the love of the work but the love of money. This should tell us that they are ready as a party to rig the coming election just as they have started in their own primaries. So the question should be why are the N.P.P aspirants fighting themselves and rigging their own primaries?
But Kojo,
This question is simple to answer , it is a huge door of opportunities. Check out the star doom it brings in, its not easy!!!
This is simple! Orga de chop am nyafu nyafu, why else? It is perceived that when you are in government or in parliament, your status in life changes. Everything about you changes, you finances, etc. Even people give you more respect even if it is fan fool respect.
It is not shoching at all if you have observed the polital terrane over the years.
The political atmosphere is not safe for the ruling NPP at all. All indicators point to their exit and it presents a scary moment for the top guns.
In the event that another party wins, DCEs and ministers of the current regime automatically lose their jobs. MPs do not lose their jobs when their parties lose and it is therefore the safest investment for any smart politician in the ruling party. This accounts for the intense fighting to get into parliament at all cost.
It happened to the NDC in 2000 and the lucjy ones like Akua Sena Dansua, who was a DCE then, managed to get into parliament.
This is why all DCEs and ministers are fighting hard to make it.
Kojo, while we’re at it we may want to find out why 23 (or so) people lined up to be presidential candidate for one political party.
peope rush to go to parliament so that they can have secured tenure as politicians, catch the eye of the president for ministerial appointement and the prestige attached to the postion. no commitment whatsoever. when your are a DCE you can easily be sacked by the president and your political ambition and tenure might come to an abrupt end. check the roll call, kojo, it is easy for a parliamentarian to go through vetting than an appointee who is not a parliamentarian. the only we can consolidate our democracy is to have commited, selfless and experience and fair minded legislators who can check on the executive and possible excesses.
it’s very sad how the parliamentarians come to you canvasing for votes amidst promises of ‘i’ll do this and do that’ but turn to something else when they get in there, i think they seek their interest first before considering the people who put them there. how come the house is mostly divided on issues of development but when it is for a car loan or allowance for the mps they all shout ‘yea-yeah’. i for one have lost a great deal of respect for most of them cos they always tell us the sweet things we wanna hear but end up not doing them. i live in Awoshie and have been there for about eighteen years now and i don’t know whether any of the parliamentarians know what we go through every morning regarding traffic on our way to work, but mps have come and gone. they go as far as nsakena and beyond when canvasing for votes but for get about the undone road when they start driving their 4×4s. well kojo, i can write a whole book on their ‘promise and fails’. i am ‘partyless’ and will remain so cos they are all the same (i mean policticians). boss have a good day!!!
The answer is very simple. This is becuase they are paid without doing much. How can a whole MP sit in the house without making any basic contribution to the debate for the four years. who will not like to be paid without working. If they are mandated at least to make a submission once a week on a bill, most of them would have left the house long a ago.
If a politicains tells you he or she is going to parliament to serve or help to build this country, tell him that I, Snyo says he or she is telling a big lie. All the people in parliament were workers in this country and abroad before they were voted there. If truly they want to serve their nation; mother Ghana, why can’t they serve at their various work places but have to be voted into parliament before they can serve. Is the parliament they only serving place in this country ? They answer is no. I must therefore end up by saying that they know what they are gaining there hence the struggle to get there even if it requires death. May God help this poor country of our. We are rich as a nation but its the politicians who have made us poor and are still struggling to milk us drier.
