Can Africa Ever Unite

May 25, 2008

Monday is a public holiday in Ghana and some other African countries to celebrate the existence of the African Union. The Union which is an organization of all African countries hopes to become a fully fledged Union government that would oversee the affairs of Africa.

Critics however say that African leaders and citizens across the continent lack the Political will to unite.

Difficulties in cross border trade, language, economic status differences are also mentioned as some of the reasons for which African may never see a union government.

But optimists say recent headway in AU unity talks points to the fact that the Union government as prescribed by the continents earliest leaders, may just come to pass soon.

Do you think Africa can Unite in the form of a Union government anytime soon?

We should think about unity in the economic front, politic will follow. Kodjo I think we should start serious construction of highways ( road network or inter - countries) across Africa, from South Africa to Libya, and from Senegal to Somalia. I bet with such a massive project, it will boost economic activities across everywhere such a construction is going on and it will lead to other emerging industries that will lead to employment of our people. when the people have jobs and respectable wages to support their families, uniting them politically will be very easy. the Europeans started their unity through the economic front and that is what we should do.

I certainly believe an African Union is achieveable . We need to realise that we are a rich continent and we only become more powerful when we are united. I appreciate that fact that each country has its own challenges but we shouldn’t let that blind our potentials.

It depends on what “unite” means. If it means encouraging “free movement of goods and persons” as listed in the ECOWAS charter, then that’s a good idea. Like Peedash said, better to start improving our individual economies first. Then we can worry about the other steps later.

“How good and how pleasant it would be, before God and man. To see the unification of all Africans. As it’s been said already, let it be done. We are the children of the Rastaman. We are the children of the Higher man. AFRICA UNITE.” Powerful lyrics there by Bob Marley way back in 1979 - 19 years ago. We have not heeded. So when? Until that day, there will be WAR in the East, West, North and South. Unity does not have a place in this scenario. Forget it!

What constitute unity? Unity to the best of my knowledge is when to or more people are at peace with each other inspite of their differences. But what is going on in Africa at the moment clearly shows that there is no unity in sight. Lets forget about it. What I will say is that our governments should make good use of the resources we have to make this country of ours a living place. This will stop people from travelling to where they are not surposed to go. When we are self sufficient, I don’t think some one would wake up one day and think of travelling aboard. Even if someone will travel, its going to be on holidays or sight seeing.

Yes! Africa can really unit but our leaders should concentrate on uniting the youth first so that the youth can grow with it and later on affect the young ones coming up.

Why should Africa unite? I think African countries must rather work in collaboration; by encouraging regional and sub-regional trade links, comparing notes on good governance, sharing cross border resources and infrastructure such as the ‘gas pipeline’ and ‘trans-west African highway’ and making joint investment in such new areas as ICT and Energy etc. The issue about African unity is not a realistic one due to rigid political boundaries, different political structures, socio-cultural factors and other deep-rooted differences! These are some of the reasons why African Unity remained an unfulfilled dream for people like Kwame Nkrumah,Sekou Toure, Jomo Kenyatta, Kenneth Kaunda and other so called Pan-Africanists!

Yea Arica can unit only if our political leaders will have a change of mind. As far as theres’ hope i strongly believe it’ll come to pass as BOB MARLEY preached. Nothing can be a barrier if its’ well draft and taking into consideration. AFRICA must also have its’ independence, the earlier we start the better will it be for the future generation.

Kojo I think Africa can only unite when all barriers have been elimated no passport is demanded from any African who wants to visit live and work in any part of the continent. Additionally we have to emulate America because with these small countries divided by barriers each with its head of state who wants to be recognised it will be very difficult to unite Africa.
