Did President Kufour surprise you?

May 28, 2008

President Kufour on Saturday morning announced a number of decisions which are being debated in Political circles days after.

He pardoned Dan Abodakpi NDC MP for Keta who was serving a 10 year jail term for willfully causing financial loss to the state on humanitarian grounds and announced that the former Vice President and NDC flagbearer Prof JEA Mills would be receiving the nation’s highest honours on July 3 for distinguished service. That nomination has been the subject of debate and various interpretations.

Some have interpreted these actions by the President as moves to make peace with the opposition while elements in the opposition say they are well intended decisions.

The President also fired interior minister Kwamena Bartels and reshuffled his some of his ministers bringing back Dr. Kwame Addo kufour as interior minister and Papa Owusu Ankoma as Trade and Industry minister.

Critics say the President’s frequent tinkering with his ministerial portfolios does do much for performance.

Before all these, the President had days before, announced a one billion dollar economic mitigation package to alleviate the hardship faced by many Ghanaians as crude and food prices also generating a lot of debate. While some say his interventions are political gimmicks others believe it will make some impact.

In all of these, we ask whether these moves are characteristic of the man Kufour or whether they come as a surprise to you………….

    Hi Kojo,
The president of our great nation did not surprise me at all. Because I do believe that he who works very hard towards a nation building really need to be rewarded for the up-and-coming ones like you and I to press on and do more than that for a reward anytime such things do happen again. Thank you and God bless you.
Long live prez. J. A, long live Ghana.

Kojo, do you know what? it is (Kuffour’s) a way of telling ghanaians that the 8 years you have given me and my government is enough and we are grateful for that. We have chopped wawawa and it is time we go and let others who are struggling in opposition to come and chop small. Remember he told Volta chiefs that non-performing government should not be voted for? Pres Kuffour knows his party members well that is people who are bent on amassing wealth at the expense of the citizenry. Really, Prez Kufour is trying to to help the opposition NDC but it’s those with eyes wide open can see what is going on. Hold on, within this six months, there is more to come !!!!!!

This shows how the president rates atta mills compared to nana akufo. The award will go along way to uniting some of us. Prez Kuffour keep it up.

Kojo, well intentioned the presidents position on awarding Prof Mills political neophyte like john boadu have muddied the waters. In any case Prof Mills towering image and sobriety will win him and the NDC victory in the forthcoming election and not an award from the PRESIDENT.

Kojo, the president should have known better in the first place. He has looked on and this man was jail. Why is he trying to pardon him now. Is it because he is about to leave the office? Talking about honouring of the former vice president, I must say that he is just trying to build a good relationship with all that he has offended over the years. Wether he releases Abudakpi or not or honours the former vice or not, we have made up our minds.

not at all i think all what he is trying to preach is peace.which means no single individual can desroy ghana because we are all one people.i think he is just trying to give honour to whom it belongs to and that is prof mills.for bartels, president kufour knows his people are corrupt and he deal with them one by one.

IF ONLY POLITICIANS WILL LEARN:Since i can not think for the president, i can only say that to intents and purposes,he took the decision he thought it best for posterity to judge. i tenaciously stick to the school of the thought that politicians not learn and will never learn. do not get me wrong!politicians are not guided by this wise saying,’the evil that men do………..if other countries can call their former presidents out of retirement to answer for their “misdeeds ” while in office, then president kufour will not surprise me if he does suffer the same fate in the future.in our local parlance, they say we get to know the length of frog after its demise. if only politicians will learn —i doubt it—they will be careful of the rope they measure others with as they are most likely to be measured by the same rope.for example, president talked about corruption being endemic coupled with larger numbers of ministers in the previous govt.let us put the president on the same scale. your guess is as good as mine.no politics intended!let us face the facts as glaring as a daylight.it is obvious that president has reached the crossroads:the decision to right wrongs committed in his tenure of office or the decision to leave things the way they are and continue to haunt him after leaving office.he must know that whichever way he chooses, he lives with it for the rest of his life.i sometimes wonder a lot whether president kufour will be hailed as a good leader or booed as an abacha-type leader after bowing out of office. whether his manna-from-heaven govt has brought smile to the faces of majority Ghanaians or their conditions of living have grown better or become worst by the day. we live to see!

For Kuffour (NPP) to “nominate” Mills (NDC) for the highest national award, for Obed Asamoah (DFP) to recently defend Mills (NDC) as not being the one to drag Ghana’s economy into shambles, for Alhaji Mumuni (NDC) to say Prez Kuffour’s (NPP) gesture to bestow honour on Atta Mills (NDC) is significant….
Guys we have shown a lot of maturity in political circles.
This does not happen in many African countries. Its laudable and i’m proud to belong to Ghana.

i dont want to beleive that NPP preaches one thing and practice another. Just two weeks ago, Nana Akufo Addo was exhorting Ghanaians to celebrate the achievement of people and what what the media described as ’skin pain attitude’.
Indded, if this is the gospel, why then turn round to be very disturbed when the president nominated Atta Mills for a National award?
I think, politics should not only be engaged in at a point convenience! That is dangerous for our future. NPP sit up and live what you preach.

Kojo, the truth is that, President Kufuor is trying very hard to unite the nation which is very commendable thing to do but I doubt if he can succeed looking at the reaction of his party members.

  17. RALPH on May 29th, 2008 12:47 pm

NOT AT ALL, HE IS JUST BEEN SMART. IN SEVEN MONTHS HE WILL BE OUT OF POWER SO HE NEED TO BUILD GOOD RELASHIPSHIP BECAUSE YOU CAN NEVER TELL.

  18. RALPH on May 29th, 2008 12:33 pm

not at all, i mean what is a dead rat to cocroch, the prisident knows he is on his way out hence he got nothing to lose after all his made enouch already so what does he care. we are all learning.

Hello Kojo, the president’s decision to honor Prof Atta Mills is a good one but i think the bringing back of Addo Kufuor is just to help him accumulate some more wealth to the detriment of the state.so far as i am concerned, NPP govt is the most corrupt govt i know.NDC should be smart enough to look for the loopholes in the NPP govt and utilise them to generate more support for the oncoming elections.

Got something to say?
