Can the Violence in Northern Ghana be stopped?
September 5, 2008
Northern Ghana has been plagued with reports of ethnic conflicts in recent years.
Many of the conflicts are as a result of unresolved land and skin disputes.
Recently violence in Tamale and Gushegu is reported to have taken a Political nature with supporters of the NPP and NDC attacking one another.
Security Analysts however contend that the violence in Northern Ghana should be blamed on a culture of impunity creeping up in the area. Many reported cases of attacks are left hanging with no prosecutions or sanctions on the culprits thereby encouraging further attacks and retaliatory responses.
Teams of military and Police personnel have been dispatched to Tamale and Gushegu to maintain the peace.
No one is however under the illusion that the presence of the Police and Military on the streets will bring lasting peace.
As Political tensions rise ahead of the December Polls in Ghana, many fear that the situation in the North could get out of hand.
How should the situation in the north be handled?

Got something to say?

peace in the north is attainable but if the pple of northern gh realise that politicians would always be politicians.but they as a pple should see themseves as one and settle their differences forget the past and unite as one pple.also i believe if the so called NDC and NPP dont inflame the issue by blaming each other for the happings in the north, there will be lasting peace not only in the north but in gh as a whole.”there will be no peace if the things we believe in are differnt from what we do”
Kojo, you attack the bull by the horns.I may sound NRUMAHIST,but,Nkrumah was right when he contended that the whole thing about chieftancy institution should be scraped,Chiefs have had their turn in administration in the Pre Colonial and even in Colonial era.Though they have made wonderfull contributions, their position in Modern Politics is SACROSANT.The are the root cause of voilence,Land litigation and Ritual killings.I sum,Chieftancy institutions in Modern politics is tantamount to a Redicule of the democratic Process.I wish we would have a leader like nkrumah who will ensure that “Chiefs will run away and leave their Sandal behind”
IDO NOT THINK SO THE PROBLEM IS SEE IS CHIEFTANCE SITUATION IN THE AREA IS THE PROBLEM.
It is possible. Pple in northern Ghana must learn to be themselves and love one another. It is in peace that development can take place. Iet people in trouble-torned areas in the north see the devastating effects of wars and fighting on their and posterity.
Education is key. What then is the essence of the lots of educated pple in Tamale/Bawku and wherever these fighting take place? Let’s allow the knowledge acquired over the years transform the place into a safe place to live and do business.
It is also disappointing that the areas engulfed in fighting in north are dominated by moslems. The Upper West and parts of the East where there are lots of christians there is little or no disturbances. This goes to confirm that secular education brought by christian missions have had tremendous impact in the development of Ghana and in particular areas in northern Ghana dominated by christians.
Moslems wake up , wake up wake up and grow and grow. Islam by the way its followers demonstrate it in dislike for their neighbours and not being each others brothers’ keeper is just not worth it.
GROW GROW GROW MOSLEMS. CHANGE.
