Achimota forest reserve or commercial center
October 24, 2008
The proposed sale of the Achimota forest was opposed by some individuals and organizations including the NDC soon after the news popped up on air waves.
A letter believed to be a directive from the castle signed by the Executive Secretary of the Lands Commission, Alhaji Hamidu Ibrahim Baryeh to the Executive Director of the Forestry Commission for advice on the proposed redevelopment of the achimota forest.
While Kofi Boakye Yiadom expressed his sentients on the proposed sale, saying it was a bad idea at a time when the world is threatened by global warming, Mr. Osafo Marfo, a member of the ruling NPP shared similar views and at that said we were lucky to have the achimota forest.
Some callers on the super morning show strongly opposed the sale of the green belt for construction into a shopping mall.
Should we be lucky to have the achimota forest; the only surviving forest reserve in the capital or should we be lucky that the redevelopment of the forest will come along with some further developments like skyscrapers, malls, etc. in the capital?
So tell me which do you prefer, forest reserve or sky scraper?

Got something to say?

Whilst it will be a good idea for the Achimota forest to remain a reserve, why cannot the departments of parks and gardens turn it into a park where it can be used positivly in a multi-dimensional way instead of leaving it bushy and overgrown and rife with sinister activities which leads citizens to feel afraid to travel any where near there at any time of the day. As a people we need to learn to manage and maintain available rescources at our disposal. God bless our homeland Ghana.
After the Achimota forest the don’t be suprise to hear that the Kufour administration wants to sell the sea at cape three point. How greedy can this NPP be.
Ghanaians help beg NPP government keep the forest, where will Accra Zoo be or does that mean Accra will not have zoo again, if our children want to see how the elephant looks after it has been defeated in the 2008 election do we have to travel all the way to Kumasi to show them, God help Accra dwellers we have had enough of the shopping centres, game, shoprite, A&C etc how many of us even get money to shop there. Let’s keep Achimota Greeening Glory.
Seriously!!!
Have we not heard of Arbor day? We know that once sold, it will not stay a ‘forest’! Let us keep the little ‘GREEN’ that we have left and maybe, just maybe we will be inspired to green a lot more of Accra. The benefit of recorded history is that the ones coming later can learn from the mistakes of others and avoid those pitfalls. Why are we so bent on distroying the very thing that other countries are paying money to rebuild.
The is a lot of value in leaving ancient trees, shrubs and other plants alone. we do not have to graze every God given vegetation in the name of so called ‘civilization’!
its amazing how our policticans want to sell everything. what is pathetic is that anytime the issue comes up they will flately deny it telling all sorts of lies and then later give us a different version. cant we have some green in Accra
Oh my goodness please leave the Achimota forest alone, what will our grand childern say about us when we are dead and gone? Who ever is thinking about commercializing or selling it should think twice.
Leave the forest alone PlesZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I think sustainable development is what we should aim for as a nation. Only God knows the number of lives the achimota forest have saved in the Accra Metropolis considering the polluted nature of the the city. The Achimota forest serves as carbon sink, habitat for different animals, educational purpose for schools including other benefits. The services of an environmental Economist is needed to quantify the benefits and give its monetary value so we have a good basis to compare with commercial development of the forest. Long live Ghana
I THINK ACCRA HAS ENOUGH OF THESE SHOPING MALLS. HENCE THE FOREST SHOULD BE LEFT ALONE, ELSE GHANAIANS WILL SUFER IT IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
