Are the standards of journalists falling?

October 27, 2008

The well organised GJA awards night didn’t really come out as expected. The exciting night left many in shock and awe. The journalist of the year prize eyed by many journalists was withheld to the disappointment of many because presentations entered for he honour did not deserve it.

No journalist of the year? You might want to ask, why?

Well the total 208 entries according to the GJA were just not good enough;below standards. This brings to mind the standards ofjournalists as the december elections approach. Have the biases of some journalists compromised their standards?

It is quite alarming that the standards of journalists are questioned with decembe r elections around the corner.

Responding to the shock of the weekend, Prof. Kwame Karikari, executive director of the Media Foundation for West Africa said on the show this morning that it was up to editors and managers of media houses to put down some checks to ensure that the quality of journalists is not compromised in any way.

As much as editors and managers are expecte to do their little bit, journalists are responsible for themselves and whatever information they send across.

How would you describe the standards of journalists in the country?

Again I ask, are the standards of journalists falling?

Now tell me what you think.

It’s appalling the kind of jounalism practiced in Ghana.i thought journalist were
to move the country forward.Unfortunately, radio stations have become extensions of the bad journalism practiced.look at CNN and u know how what journalists are made of.SCHADE!!!Newspapers have become extensions of political fighting.Kojo,we have Kwame Sefa,Kwaku Baako, etc who won National Awards and yet ….May God help Ghana.

Kojo it’s sad that no one was named as the Journalist of the Year, but I believe none of those who won awards on the night deserved to be named as the Journalist of the Year. The standards of journalism in the country has fallen deep and it’s high journalists woke up to face reality. In an era where journalists have left their watch dog role and become PR’s for political parties, the vetting committee of the GJA awards did the right thing.
Maybe Kojo, Israel Laryea deserved it, but whether he presented his work to the committee or not is also another issue. Lets just keep our fingers crossed, next year Ato Kwamena Dadzie will make all of us proud by winning the prestigious award.

february 2007 highway robbers and 17th septemebr 2008 in my house at McCarthy.

    Kojo,

I think the level of journalism in Ghana is very poor. Infact apart from few radio stations like JOY, the way and manner they present news, entertainment, sports, current affairs etc are not the best.

Tell me, apart from Isreal Laryee and other few presenters and journalists here in GHana, How many radio and other media journalists are internationally recognised or win international awards.

Especially our local radio news readers. I dont listen to them becos they report with funny and “not axactly the word” words which makes listening to news and soccer commentary non attractive

God save some journalists of our generation and the standard of journalism in the Ghana

Frankly speaking, I think the standards of journalism has been low for a very long time now. I disagree with people who assert that ghanaian journalists are providing us with sub standard performances because that is what the ordinary ghanaian wants. The problem with ghanaians is that we praise and accept mediocre performances. I prefer listening to either your station or the BBC because i feel the two provide me with information and news that I need. I often get frustrated whenever i listen to any of our local fm stations or television stations. We must as ghanaians exchew mediocrity.

The level of journalism in Ghana has fallen so badly that I sieze to respect most journalists in Ghana today. How can the standard improve when you have people like kweku Baako, Gaby, Egbert, Kuuku Welson Jones, Baby Ansah baa and others who always defend the bad governing style of the Npp. Eventhough i am not a journalist, i know that journalists are supposed to put the ruling government on its toes but it is the opposite that we see in Ghana. Joy fm’s kofi Owusu was trying to join that category of journalists when he was hosting the news file but thank God he was replaced with Akwesi Sarpong who is doing excellently. Those so called senior journalists have made the profession so useless. Shame upon them. Ben Ephson, Raymond Archer and Kwesi Praat, BIG UPPS TO YOU.

Got something to say?
