Muntaka Pampers - If you want to clean up the house, keep your hands clean

August 12, 2009

Today, I had a long chat with the former sports minister Muntaka Mubarak on his Pampers and baby oil saga which led to his removal from office.

While Alhaji Muntaka insisted he had done nothing wrong, I was left with the feeling that the then sports minister had just been inexperienced with his actions and inactions.

Alhaji has forever made the argument that he was set up by a mafia at the ministry and subtly hints that he was not protected by the NDC government that appointed him. He sights many examples of deals and collusions at the ministry which he tried to correct and save the taxpayer some money. And I honestly believe Alhaji was set up because of this.

Yet he failed (while clearing the rot) to keep his hands clean.

Perhaps the best founded charge against Alhaji Muntaka is his relationship with a certain Miss Edith of parliament house (secretary to majority leader Alban Bagbin) who he travelled with on two occasions while on official assignment. Both trips were on government business, and Alhaji gives reasons that none of this was done with ill intent or directly by him. And in my opinion, even when we grant him that – they happened ON his watch….still very bad enough.

Some of his predecessors – E.T. Mensah, Yaw Osafo Marfo, and OB amoah had thrived and even succeeded in that same ministry inspite of the existence of this same so called mafia. (Was it perhaps because they chose to play ball?) In my belief, these men were a little more careful when sweeping the house clean and most importantly, kept their hands (to the best of our knowledge – clean)

So Alhaji may not have had criminal intent, nor was he perhaps bent on stealing from the Taxpayer. But Alhaji, the laws on causing financial loss for instance suggest that our public officers are not only expected to be honest in their dealings, but must also be CAREFUL so that they do not slip or drop in areas that would cost the Taxpayer some hurt.

I sincerely believe that but for the Edith –German and Abidjan trips, the President would have reinstated Muntaka. It was his unclean hands, that led to his demise.

Lesson, it doesn’t matter how much good you intend to do.

They that come seeking equity must come with clean hands.

kojo, i can safely conclude from Alhaji’s submissions that at least the last Minister of State played ball. Indeed, he committed some error in judgement as he admited on your show, but beyond those “dirty hands” are serious issues whisc require national attention. i strongly feel, that we should not allow the media and a few fickle minded guys to cover up the rot by consistently shouting ‘chinchinga, pampers etc.’
i’m extremely happy to learn that the President has set up a probe into the activities of the ministry, which gives credence to Alhaji’s cry. kojo we have blown one side of the matter too much, it’s about time the searchlight is also thrown on the substantive issue that the Ex-Minister is passionate about.
As Langabell jokingly puts it - ‘he play loose’ but needs to be heard!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Muntaka has really disgraced himself and his family. I least expected him to have behaved in that manner. However it is a great lesson for him and up and coming politicians. But the fact remains that there is something seriously wrong at the ministry and the earlier the authorities do something about it the better.

Joy FM i think you are not doing this country any good, if i may ask
Why don’t you highlight the offense committed by Asaabee.
You hype the siege of BNI, is that right when he was been detained by a lawful institution. the NPP should have told the people that Asabee is being accuesed and we have to let the law take its course.
