Who would have the Political will to transform our state institutions?

August 20, 2009

Our discussions in the past week have all ended with a common suggestion that to prevent some ills (such as electoral fraud and violence), our state and Public institutions need to be strengthened and made independent to deliver.

On Thursday on the super morning show, we sought to identify why state institutions mostly fail to live up to their mandates in Ghana.

Key among the reasons assigned was one assigned by Anna Bossman, deputy CHRAJ boss….”That if we want to strengthen our state institutions so that they can deliver excellent services, the responsibility lies squarely on government to resource them and grant them their independence .”

In her view “ successive government s have lacked the political will to correct our priorities and pump resources where they are most needed, while they often find monies to invest in other ventures that they deem important.”

I’m still wondering why governments, knowing very well that stronger state institutions mean better governance which in turn means higher likelihood of staying on in power, would blatantly refuse to empower same institutions.

Could it be that governments derive more benefits when state institutions are relatively weaker and under-resourced?

kojo i think the principle of independence of various state institutions should be enforced and be well equipped with the requisite resources with a government who does not renege.

Got something to say?
