Which better develops the child - Public or private school?

September 17, 2009

This morning we have students from some public schools in our studios discussing the problems affecting their studies. This follows last week’s appearance by their counterparts from three private schools in Accra. Tell us what you think - Do private schools develop the child better or public schools do. You might as well want to sit on the fence with other views. Be part of the discussion.

it depends on serveral factors. i went to one of the public schools in a village in brong ahafo but because my parents were always there for me, helping me in my assignments and encouraging me i am now a medical doctor. so i believe that the school one attends matters but what is the most important is the commitment and interest parents show in their wards education.

Kojo, the French Colonial education system has an intereting lesson to learn. They admitted about 30 students from the west African francophone countries into a college in Dakar and trained them in everything for 4 years. The class was then divided into 3. The top third were given further training to become teachers. The middle third became administrators and the bottom third became doctors, engineers etc. The thinkng was that your best brains must be the teachers as teachers form the foundation of all learning. For a large number of people in Ghana, teaching is what you do when you cannot get anything else to do. The significant few who go in there as best brains are making a great difference. The rest are waiting to move on. How can we expect the best in our schools?

IT DEPENDS ON A NUMBER OF FACTORS. THIS IS SIMPLY BECAUSE ONE CAN ATTEND A PRIVATE SCHOOL AND COME OUT VERY BAD AND THE OPPOSITE FOR A PUBLIC SCHOOL. ALL THAT MATTERS HERE IS THE SUPERVISION OF BOTH PARENTS AND THE TEACHERS INVOLVE. THEY SHOULD ALWAYS TRY TO GIVE PROPERLESSONS THAT CAN CONSUME BOTH ACADEMICALLY AND SOCIALLY.

i think at times attending a private school helps. but not always. let me share my experience. i went to a public school for my basic education, that is from class one to six. i was one of the toughest girls in class interms of acadamics. i left to another school for my junior high, and realised i could not speck as fluently compared to them. but, when it comes to writing no challenger. i realised they were thought how to speak than to write. which is very bad. im not saying writing more than speaking is good. it should be 50-50.
considering this present times, i will not send my ward to a public school, especially for the basic education.

Kojo, there were a group of students in Washington DC last week from Achimota school on a reading exchange program. I think it will be great to have them on your show to share their experiences and encourage reading among school children (and adults) in Ghana.

i think it is advisable to take your ward to a private junior high and a public senior high and to a public university because their the best in the country.
