ENERGY MINISTER CONFIRMS: There were anomalies in Those Million Dollar Deals

February 17, 2010

Former Deputy British High Commissioner Craig Murray has written an article on his blog alleging that the UK is complicit in corruption in Ghana, specifically citing several specific projects, many in the energy sector. You can read Murray’s article in full here.

The SMS team called Energy Minister, Dr. Joe Oteng Adjei who told us that government became aware of many of these anomalies upon taking office and is already investigating several of them.

On claims that the NDC government is in the pocket of certain foreign investors, he asserted the ‘integrity’ of the Ghanaian government.

On the Zachem International project and the allegation that turbines there are damaged and there is no activity on the project, the Energy Minister said he has personally visited the site and that the project has been frozen while government reviews it. However he says he has not seen or received evidence of any such damage.

On the Balkan energy contract, which Murray says will lead to the loss of billions of dollars for Ghanaians, the Minister says a committee he set up to look into it found that work was not being done. He said there was not a single Ghanaian government engineerĀ  or project manager to monitor the project. He says the government has been audaciously sent to arbitration on the issue but he insists that if necessary, government will shut the project down.

He commended Murray for blowing the whistle, asking all patriotic Ghanaians to come forward with any such information with the assurance that the Energy Ministry will treat it with discretion.

Where are we going? Its a pity our poliiticians do not have the country at heart. We the youth must change our focus and boot these people out, unfortunately most of our people have been bought by this filthy money so it becomes difficult to mobilise people. let us resist these wolves in sheepskin.

You have admitted that ur wife is still holding a Ghanaian passport. I was taking u serious until u woefully admitted this. What makes u think that Ghanaians should take u serious. you sound bitter because a company you chair lost out in competitive bid. That is normal cos u are a human being. U remind me of this writing on c’wealth hall during my undergraduate days, “if u have nothing to do dont do it here”"
